Social Media Blasts Jimmy Kimmel For ‘White Privilege’ Over Joke About Reporting John Oliver To ICE
During the Emmys 2020, Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about reporting night show host John Oliver to ICE officials (Immigration and Customs Enforcements). Now, social media is blasting him for his not-so-funny, “white privilege” comments about Oliver, who was born in the U.K. and became a U.S. citizen last December.
While hosting the virtual awards ceremony last night (Sept. 20), Kimmel, who was nominated for Outstanding Variety Talk Series against Oliver — who ended up winning for the fifth consecutive year since 2015 for his work on ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver‘ — quipped, “Congratulations again to John Oliver, I will be reporting him to ICE tomorrow.”

In addition to being called “tone-deaf” and “white privileged,” social media users were quick to slam Kimmel and bring up his recently resurfaced history of racial insensitivity; recalling the times he used blackface while portraying NBA star Karl Malone and Oprah Winfrey on Comedy Central’s ‘The Man Show.’

This joke was hurtful and tone deaf, @jimmykimmel. https://t.co/z5oN7XFhLj

Does Jimmy Kimmel genuinely not know that John Oliver is a US citizen? (Also even if he wasn't that ICE joke would be in poor taste) #Emmys

Jimmy Kimmel joking about calling ICE on American citizen John Oliver was a bad look, even as a “sour grapes” gag. Pretty sure only one of them could pass the citizenship test.
