A Wisconsin teacher who was set to walk down the aisle to say “I do” found herself walking down an unfamiliar place instead: the slammer.
24-year-old elementary school teacher Madison Bergmann was arrested for allegedly engaging in inappropriate behavior with one of her fifth-grade students! Miss Bergmann has been accused of having a romantic relationship with the 11-year-old boy just months before her wedding.
As wild as that sounds, it gets worse: the incident only came to light after the student’s mother overheard her son talking to the teacher on the phone. Of course, concerned about the nature of their conversation, the mother confronted her son. From there, she discovered text messages exchanged between the teacher and her child. Filled with disgust and outrage, the boy’s father took matters into his own hands and stormed into River Crest Elementary School armed with printouts of the conversations.
During the investigation, the police found a folder in the teacher’s bag with the victim’s name on it. Inside were handwritten notes, where she detailed detailing their physical interactions. One in particular read, “One of my cousins is in the 5th grade and I can’t imagine a man talking to her how we talk. I know we have a special relationship and I do love you more than anyone in the world but I have to be the adult here and stop.”
While it’s unclear when the abuse started, Bergmann told investigators she was given the young boy’s phone number by his mother…when his family invited her to the Afton Alps for winter break in December. To note, this was the same month her husband popped the big question to her. Whew!
More From Bergmann:
According to docs, when it was time to come clean, Bergmann invoked her right to an attorney.
The Hudson School District told parents the same day as her arrest that she had been placed on administrative leave. She was also told not to contact any district students, parents, or staff.
“Learning about a school staff member and alleged inappropriate conduct that breaches trust is deeply troubling for all of us,” the message states.
As a result of her alleged crime, she’s now looking at one count of first-degree child sexual assault. She has since been released on a $25,000 signature bond.
