Around 2:00 p.m., the boy fired the pistol inside a first-grade classroom at Richneck Elementary School. All other students were sent to a gymnasium with their teachers, according to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew, who spoke to WTKR.”They’re actually in there with with counselors and officers. [They’re] cutting up a little bit… It’s good to see them laughing. We want to make sure that they’re OK,” he said.

According to school administrators, the boy was arrested by police, and the school will be closed on Monday. The shooting did not result in any further victims. George Parker III, the superintendent of schools, told CBS News that the situation was “awful.”

“Our students learned about gun violence today. We are all in shock and recognize that there is much work to be done as a community to ensure that things like this don’t happen because this is horrific and it should never happen.”

A parent also expressed concerns about gun control after learning about today’s shooting.

The shooting sparked debate on social media as many believe the boy’s parents should be charged for the crime. One person wrote,”There was an altercation between the student and the teacher. The student pulled the gun and shot the student. This makes me think something had been going on with the teacher and the student prior to this. Why did a 6 yr old bring a gun to shoot a teacher? Where did it come from?”

“For a 6-yr old to be so angry that he quietly took the gun, hid it in his backpack, pulled it out and deliberately shot the teacher is really disturbing,” another user said.

We will provide more updates as details surrounding this case are revealed.
