Sia Deletes Twitter Following Apology To Autism Community After ‘Offensive’ Film Receives Golden Globe Nominations
As her “offensive” film ‘Music‘ wins two Golden Globe nominations, Australian singer-songwriter Sia has deleted her Twitter after issuing an apology to the Autism community over her controversial directorial debut.
Prior to the nominations, the film, which stars “Chandelier” and “Elastic Heart” dancer Maddie Zigler as “Music,” a nonverbal girl with autism, and actress Kate Hudson, her sister and caretaker, has been widely criticized for casting a neuroatypical actor in the title role, plus its offensive and infantilizing portrayal of autism.

Responding to the backlash, Sia tweeted, “I promise, have been listening. The motion picture ‘Music’ will, moving forward, have this warning at the head of the movie … ‘Music’ in no way condones or recommends the use of restraint on autistic people. There are autistic occupational therapists that specialise in sensory processing who can be consulted to explain safe ways to provide proprioceptive, deep-pressure feedback to help w meltdown safety. I’m sorry. I plan to remove the restraint scenes from all future printings. I listened to the wrong people and that is my responsibility, my research was clearly not thorough enough, not wide enough.”
