A new study revealed that your height may play a role in an individual’s longevity and claims shorter people may live longer than taller people.

In a report by CNBC, experts said shorter people are now expected to live longer lives based on their health and body chemistry. Researchers said individuals with smaller bodies have lower death rates and fewer diet-related chronic diseases, especially those in their middle age. Jean-Marie Robine, an expert demographer, said the cells in a taller person’s body need more cell replication, which can make you more exhausted quicker.

Other data shows that the average of height of women matches their longevity, as the average American woman over 20 is about 4-foot-4. Internationally, the average height for women is approximately 5-foot-3. David Sinclair, co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research at Harvard Medical School, says the height difference between men and women is due to growth hormone levels.

Robine says women are more resistant to mortality and death than men because they are more resilient when it comes to certain difficulties. He theorized that women also feel more responsible for others in terms of their children, which makes them stronger.

“As long as a man is staying healthy without disability, his level of mortality is the same as the level of a woman. But men are poorly surviving if they are not in very good health. And women are much more resistant to ‘not perfect’ health.

“It’s just so amazing women are living longer because it is well-known and well-acknowledged that our societies are not treating women very well, so we would expect the opposite.”

The study also sparked debate on Twitter as shorter people felt like they were finally acknowledged for their height as a positive rather than a negative.
