Sheesh! Whoopi Goldberg Doesn’t Believe Margot Robbie And Greta Gerwig Were Snubbed By The Oscars: ‘There Are No Snubs…Not Everybody Gets A Prize’
The recent controversy surrounding the Oscar nominations for the 2024 ceremony has sparked debates and discussions about the concept of snubs. Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, both highly talented individuals in the film industry, were notably absent from the nominations for Best Director and Best Actress, respectively, for their work in the film “Barbie .” However, Whoopi Goldberg , an Oscars legend, has shared her perspective on the matter, emphasizing that not everyone can be recognized with a nomination or win.
Whoopi Goldberg, who is a well-respected actor, Academy Award winner, and a former host of the Oscars, believes that the notion of snubs is subjective. During a recent episode of “The View,” Goldberg addressed the controversy, stating that “there are no snubs.” She emphasized that not everyone can receive a nomination or win, as the process is based on subjective opinions. Goldberg’s viewpoint highlights the fact that movies are subjective, and the films people love may not be loved by those who are voting.
Goldberg’s response came in the wake of the backlash against the Academy for excluding Greta Gerwig from the Best Director category and Margot Robbie from the Best Actress category. Despite the film “Barbie ” earning eight nominations, including Best Picture, the absence of Gerwig and Robbie in their respective categories led to criticism. Goldberg explained, “everybody doesn’t win” and “you don’t get everything you want to get.” She added,
“There are no snubs,” said added. “That’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective. The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting.”

The nominations and awards season leading up to the Oscars often serve as indicators of who might receive recognition. Gerwig and Robbie received nominations at various pre-cursor awards, such as the Golden Globes and Critic’s Choice Awards, leading many to believe that their Oscar nominations were inevitable.
Additionally, Gerwig’s nomination at the Directors Guild of America awards further solidified her reputation as a talented director. The success of “Barbie,” both critically and commercially, with a gross of $1.4 billion, further fueled expectations for Gerwig and Robbie’s recognition. However, Goldberg’s perspective reminds us that the voting process is subjective, and the opinions of those who vote may differ from popular expectations.
Despite that, many people including her Robbie’s Barbie cast mates feels like she and deserved to be recognized in those categories.
Ryan Gosling, who earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor released a statement saying,
“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement. Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”
America Ferrara, who plays Gloria in “Barbie” and earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress, also said in a statement to Variety that she was “incredibly disappointing” by the snubs.
“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” Ferrera explained. “Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”
Furthermore, former First Lady Hillary Clinton weighed in on and said, “While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You’re both so much more than Kenough.”
Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the 2024 Oscars, which will be held March 10 at its usual home, the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
