Sha’Carri Richardson has qualified for her first Olympic games after winning the women’s 100-meter final on Saturday (June 22) at the Olympic trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Richardson completed the race in first place with a time of 10.71 — the fastest time in the 100m in the world this year. After making the new feat, Richardson secured her spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics with the U.S. Olympic team.
Sha’Carri Richardson’s big win also arrives one day after she made headlines on Friday (June 21) for finishing in the number one spot at the women’s 100-meter dash on day one of the trials in Oregon — despite tripping and nearly falling to the ground due to untied shoelaces!
A video of Friday night’s race at Hayward Field shows the 24-year-old stumbling over her laces just as she came out of the blocks. However, she quickly recovered from it and ended up overtaking all five of her competitors. She won the race in 10.88 seconds — the fastest time of the runners in all four heats of the 100-meter dash on Saturday, according to NBC Sports.
Richardson secured herself a spot in the semifinals and later qualified for her first Olympic games on Saturday, so she’s gearing up for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Speaking on her stumble and quick recovery, Richardson told NBC, “I definitely didn’t have the start I’ve been training to have in this moment. But I’m still not panicking. I’m staying patient and knowing no matter what’s going on, to continue to run my race.”
In June 2021, the Louisiana State University graduate first qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics after clocking a time of 10.86 seconds for the 100-meter dash at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials. She secured her spot on Team USA at just 21 years old, however, she was suspended from the team for one month after testing positive for THC, a chemical commonly found in marijuana.
Subsequently, she missed the entire Olympic games. Despite the setback, Sha’Carri Richardson took it on the chin and had one of the greatest comebacks ever seen! Last year, she was named the world’s fastest woman after winning the 100-meter dash at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. She set a new record at the prestigious competition with a time of 10.65 seconds.
