Senate Passes Bill In Response To Wave Of Violence Against Asians

Amid the recent wave of violence against Asians in America, the Senate has passed a bill to combat hate crimes and discrimination.

On Thursday (Apr. 22), the Senate passed a bill that will help law enforcement and communities tackle violence against Asians in the U.S., especially amid the current “Stop Asian Hate” movement. It’s reported that the bill was approved by legislation 94-1, with Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo. as the only opposing member of the bill.

Additionally, Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii led the bill — which looks to guide the Department of Justice in “expediting he review of hate crimes related to Covid-19 that were reported to law enforcement agencies and help them establish ways to report such incidents online and perform public outreach.”

Speaking on the bill, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. stated, “Racism has always existed in America unfortunately and the legacy of anti-Asian sentiment goes back centuries to dark chapters in our history.”
