The vote was 57-43 as the decision needed a two-thirds majority to convict Trump on a charge of insurrection due to a speech he gave on Jan 6. telling his supporters that they will storm the Capitol building. According to Yahoo News!, only seven out of 50 Republicans voted alongside the Democrats to convict Trump. They hoped the devastating events that took place during the Capitol riots would be enough to convict the former president and said it would prevent him from running for office again to promote any political violence in the future.

Trump’s attorney Van der Veen said in the closing remarks that Democrats encouraged the public to attack police officers and said local officials failed to provide proper security for the Capitol.

“Throughout the summer Democrat leaders including the current president and vice president repeatedly made comments that provided moral comfort to mobs attacking police officers. The gathering on Jan. 6 was supposed to be an entirely peaceful event”
