Selena Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, has revealed how she became fearful of losing her daughter after learning about her mental breakdown amid the singer’s Revival tour in 2016. The rather shocking remark was made in Gomez’s upcoming Apple TV+ documentary, “My Mind & Me,” which hits the streaming platform on Friday.

The doc, which gives fans a look into the challenges Gomez has faced over the years battling lupus, body image issues, tabloid hell, and her struggle with bipolar disorder, sees Teefey recall a low moment when she says her daughter had shunned her after being taken to a hospital for immediate treatment. “We heard about her mental breakdown through TMZ,” she recalled.

“They called me and wanted to know what my daughter was doing in the hospital with a nervous breakdown. She didn’t want anything to do with me and I was scared she was going to die.” It was explained that during the tour, Gomez experienced severe self-confidence issues as she hysterically broke into tears, asking, “When am I going to just be good enough by myself,” referring to her former relationship with ex Justin Bieber.

“When am I going to be good just by myself not needing anybody to be associated with.” The tour ended up being canceled after 55 shows because the Disney alum was no longer healthy enough to continue with the remaining dates, it was revealed in the documentary, with Gomez having suffered from anxiety and panic attacks, as well as depression.

The New York Post asserts that at the time, there were also rumors swirling Gomez may have developed a drug problem, which would have only worsened the state of her mental health which was already at an all-time low. Theresa Mingus, who formerly worked as Gomez’s assistant, also appears in the special, remembering how bad things had gotten during the time she was handling day-to-day errands for the award-winning singer.

“It was one of those moments where you look in her eyes and there’s nothing there. It was just pitch black. And it’s so scary. You’re like okay, f—k this. This needs to end, we need to go home,” she said.

Meanwhile, Teefey continued by saying that while she was gutted that her daughter would later have to seek treatment at a mental health facility, she remained hopeful that Gomez was going to get the help she needed to no longer to feel like she didn’t want to be living anymore.

“You hang on as tight as you can and try to help them with their treatment and that’s the hardest thing to do. To then just go to bed and hope that they wake up the next day,” she emotionally expressed.
