Under their guidance, officials state that if the student wants to change their gender, it must be fully supported by school staff. The decision was made to make the change start at the age of four because officials say that ‘recognition and development of gender identity can occur at a young age.’ The curriculum has also required primary and secondary schools to also include books about transgender people, choosing which bathroom to use, and gender-neutral uniforms.

‘Some young people are exploring their gender identity in primary school settings. Primary schools need to be able to meet the needs of these young people to ensure they have a safe, inclusive and respectful environment in which to learn.’

Officials also stated that students should be asked their families are aware of their gender change but it was encouraged that teachers should not contact parents. Students are not required to use the bathroom based on their assigned gender based on Scottish law.

This guidance outlines how schools can support transgender young people while ensuring that the rights of all pupils are fully respected. It provides schools with practical suggestion. The guidance is not prescriptive and does not promote transitioning.’ said education secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville.
