Say What? ‘Scooby Doo’ Character Velma Dinkley Confirmed To Be A Lesbian In New ‘Trick Or Treat’ Movie

“Scooby Doo” character Velma Dinkley appears to have come out as gay. The much-loved character, who most either know from the popular animated TV series or blockbuster movies in the early ‘00s, seemingly confirms she’s a lesbian in the latest film, “Trick Or Treat,” where she hints at having a huge crush on a woman named Coco.

In some of the clips that have surfaced on Twitter, Velma, who is easily distinguishable with her signature orange turtleneck and glasses, is seen traveling in a car with both Coco and Shaggy. Whenever Velma is around Coco, Velma gets shy and flustered, but in one particular scene, she’s heard saying, “I’m sure Coco has some brilliant observations on the encounter we’ve just had,” to which Coco responds, “The cute one is right.”

Coco is then seen gently stroking Velma’s shoulder, with the latter beginning to blush. This is the first time that the popular character’s sexuality has come into question in the actual movies, but judging by the response on social media, people are absolutely here for the unexpected storyline.

“OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO,” one fan wrote on Twitter, while another added, “I never thought I’d live to see the day when Velma is very clearly having gay thoughts on-screen.”

A third echoed similar words, calling her storyline “powerful.” They said, “Velma being a canon lesbian/gay in three separate SD universes is so amazing she’s just so powerful that she willed it into existence.”

What’s really interesting about Warner Bros – the studio behind the latest movie — is that when “Scooby Doo” writer James Gunn first approached them with a storyline that tackles Velma’s sexuality back in 2001, it didn’t appear as if there was much interest from executives to move ahead with those ideas.

The idea to portray Velma as a lesbian was seemingly looked down upon, as Gunn revealed on Twitter two years ago, “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

“Scooby Doo” has been pivotal to many of our lives, having first premiered on the small screen back in 1969 on CBS. The show — and movies — follows the lives of teenage friends, Velma, Daphne, Fred, and Shaggy as they embark on countless adventures with their dog, Scooby-Doo.
