It’s been a long time coming, but it appears as if Saweetie is (finally) ready to drop her debut album. While the “My Type” rapper signed her major record deal with Warner Records back in early 2018, fans have grown frustrated by the constant delays in getting a first full-length project from the 29-year-old. Saweetie has still been able to secure herself a string of platinum plaques with her singles, “My Type,” “Tap In” and “Best Friend,” featuring Doja Cat, but the handling of her music career has certainly left a lot of people puzzled.
In a new interview with Metro, however, the “Icy Girl” hitmaker confirms that while she’s currently still working on her album, she expects to release it sometime this year. “Definitely way before the end of the year,” she expressed. “I’m working on the album, I’m really focused on my craft right now. I’m about to drop some treatments and collaborate some direct with some directors to shoot some new music videos.” It’s still unclear as to what direction Saweetie plans to take her music in next, but she made sure to add that the record will include “more collaborations” than what fans would probably expect.

When she was asked who would be her dream artist to collaborate with somewhere down the line, the California native made it clear that the only person on her mind would be Rihanna for what she hopes will be the ultimate party anthem. “I definitely want to work with Rihanna. [The Super Bowl] wasn’t even a game, it was the Rihanna concert. [We would] release a dance record to get the party going.” Back in November, Saweetie dropped her fourth EP, “The Single Life,” which was met with a lukewarm response from critics, going on to sell just 2,000 copies in its first week.
In fact, the seven-day sales of the EP went on to make more headlines than the EP itself, which is a worrying situation to be in for an artist who, despite having landed multiple hit records, has yet to produce a studio album after signing a record deal. Has the interest in Saweetie declined because of the way her music career has been steered in recent years?
Whatever the case may be, no one can deny that Saweetie is one of the most consistent artists who has continued to secure endorsement deals from Quay Australia to MAC and McDonald’s. In February 2022, she dropped what should’ve been another hit single, “Closer” with R&B singer H.E.R., but the song failed to attract much attention, amassing just over 28 million views since its release.

“The Single Life” was supported by six singles, including “Don’t Say Nothin,'” which includes a line which fans think was aimed at her ex-boyfriend, Quavo. On the track, she raps, “Post a pic in his sweatshirt, I bet it have my ex hurt/ That’s what I get for kissin’ on these frogs/ He got mad and told my business to the blogs.”
