Sandra Bullock’s longtime partner, Bryan Randall, has died after a private battle with ALS, according to PEOPLE. His family released a statement to the news outlet saying that the 57-year-old “passed away peacefully” over the weekend.
“It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS,” his family shared. “Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request. We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours,” his family added.
The Randall family concluded, “At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.” Bullock and Randall made things official back in January of 2015. The 59-year-old actress purposely kept her relationship private after going through a very public divorce with her ex, Jesse James in 2010. While on the Red Table Talk in 2021 Bullock explained that Randall is this love of her life. “I am someone who went through the divorce process,” she explained. “I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children — three children, his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever.”
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It primarily leads to the degeneration of motor neurons, which are responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements. As these motor neurons degenerate, the muscles they control weaken and atrophy, leading to difficulties in speaking, swallowing, breathing, and moving.
The exact cause of ALS is not fully understood, though it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In some cases, there may be a family history of the disease, suggesting a genetic component. However, the majority of cases appear to be sporadic, with no clear genetic link.
Symptoms of ALS can vary widely from person to person, but common early signs may include muscle weakness, twitching (fasciculations), cramping, and difficulty with coordination and fine motor skills. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience more severe muscle weakness, loss of muscle mass, and eventually paralysis.
