San Diego Man, 21, In Custody After Threatening To Jump Off A Roller Coaster
On Sunday (Oct. 25), a 21-year-old San Diego man was taken into custody after threatening to jump off a roller coaster at Belmont Park. After nearly eight hours, authorities successfully talked the man down from jumping.
Before removal, in a clip that’s surfaced, the man is seen pacing back and forth at the top of the Giant Dipper attraction, also known as the Mission Beach Roller Coaster, which is said to reach around 75 feet. The man, who was not in a car, climbed up the non-operating ride and began screaming and making threats, acting erratically for hours, per eyewitnesses.

As police and fire department officials stood below, negotiators attempted to speak with the man; but for a good while, there were no signs of him cooperating. During the standoff, the man yelled out his age, stating he was 21 and that he’s “no fool.” After almost eight hours atop the roller coaster, officers took the man into custody after he climbed down and jumped on top of a roof. The man was immediately transported to a mental health facility for evaluation.
