O’Donnell discussed her thoughts on an episode of the “Hot Takes and Dives” where she talked about her relationship with Whitney Houston and other topics. She states that Houston was often conflicted with her sexuality due to her upbringing in a Baptist church along with meeting Houston’s closest friend, Robyn Crawford.

“Whitney was troubled by, I think, the gay part of her life and didn’t want it exposed. It’s hard in black culture to accept gayness. It’s culturally more difficult, I think. And the church… the Baptist Church weighed heavily on her… Growing up in the church and singing gospel, [for Houston] I think that there was a lot of conflict about that.”

O’Donnell also referenced a time when Houston was a no-show for her talk show in 1997 and was scheduled to promote “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” but she canceled 45 minutes before her appearance. She says she contacted Houston’s team since she witnessed her struggle with drugs and blamed them for enabling her behavior.

“She didn’t show up. So I said to her crew, ‘This is all on all of you. Because when she dies, everyone is going to ask why you didn’t do something.’

Robyn also reached out to the talk show host and said they tried to help her but “couldn’t.” Houston died 15 years later due to accidental drowning in a bathtub after consuming drugs at the Beverly Hills Hotel before Clive Davis’ Grammy party.
