Yikes! Ron DeSantis is on a roll with his “extreme anti-LGBTQIA+ agenda.” Under a new rule imposed by their GOP Governor, Florida students who are wanting to use nicknames or “alternate” names in school, will now need to get parental permission to do so.

The same Governor who signed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill back in May 2023, is now back with another rule making it harder for students, heterosexual or otherwise, to have their teachers and other school staffers use a nickname or “alternate” name to address them on campus.
Now, Florida students who prefer using shorthand names, or different ones altogether, will need to have their parental permission for the name change.

In an email sent out on Tuesday morning (August 8), parents and guardians of Seminole County students were told that some school districts in the state are now “required to develop a form to obtain parental consent to use any deviation or nickname from the child’s legal name in school.”
The statement continued to note, “If you would like for your child to be able to use a name aside from their legal given name on any of our campuses, we will ask for you to complete the consent form titled ‘Parental Authorization for Deviation from Student’s Legal Name Form.'”
In the email blasted out to all parents and guardians in the district, the new rule was cited as 61-1.0955(8)(m), which was implemented in July. According to the Florida Department of Education, the new policy is meant “to strengthen the rights of parents and safeguard their child’s educational record to ensure the use of the child’s legal name in school or a parent-approved nickname.”
Parents and guardians to students in Orange County and Escambia County received a similar memo this week. Again, the new rule not only affects students who identify as LGBTQIA+ and want to use alternate names; it also affects students who simply prefer to use a shorthand nickname; for instance: “Ron DeSantis” versus “Ronald DeSantis.”

It is also reported that even if a student who identifies as LGBTQIA+ received permission from their parent to use an “alternate” name, school staffers would still not even be obligated to use that child’s preferred pronouns. This is all thanks to Florida House Bill 1069, which Ron DeSantis approved and sent into effect in July.
The controversial bill prohibits school employees from being required to use “certain titles and pronouns.” According to DeSantis, the new measure “protects [all] students from having to declare their pronouns in school.”
