How Did Robert Hoobler AKA “Uncle Bob” Save Lil Wayne’s Life At 12?
Now, as the story goes, Hoobler met Wayne, real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. on the afternoon of Nov. 11, 1994.
It’s reported that Wayne had left school early and went home to grab something to eat. Once inside his family’s Hollygrove apartment, he ended up finding a 9mm pistol one of the bedrooms.
According to police reports, the gun had been left in the room from the previous day, by a friend of the family who had gone to watch a football game.
When Wayne picked up the gun he ended up firing a bullet into his chest. He quickly got to a phone and dialed 9-1-1, then crawled to the front door, as he bled out waiting for help.
It’s said that Hoobler was off-duty when he responded to the call. He was headed to work an off-duty security detail when he heard the dispatcher on his police radio state their was a boy with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the Hollygrove neighborhood.

Without any hesitation, Hoobler rushed to Wayne’s apartment, knocked and heard him utter out, “Help me. i’ve been shot.”
Hoobler kicked down the door and discovered Wayne in a bloodied t-shirt and jeans.
As they waited for dispatchers to send an ambulance, they soon learned that non were available, so Hoobler picked Wayne up and carried him to the back of a cruiser and drove him to a hospital himself.
Hoobler continued to speak to Wayne during the car ride to keep him awake and once at the hospital, Hoobler put him on a gurney and rushed him to the emergency room for help.
An ER nurse later told Hoobler that “If y’all had waited (for an ambulance) he would have died.” Fortunately, thanks be to Hoobler and the ER staff, Wayne’s life was saved that day and he grew up to become one of the world’s biggest and most prominent rap artists ever.
In a 2009 interview, Hoobler said, “I’m proud of what he’s done. But I would’ve done the same for the guy no one ever heard about again.”
In 2018, while accepting an award, Wayne recalled the incident and again thanked him for refusing to let him die all those years ago.
