Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Vol. 2 fashion show went down last week and it had everyone talking. While most people loved the virtual event which included a diverse group of beautiful models and great performances by stars including Ella Mai, Roddy Ricch, and more, some fans were actually bothered by the background music that was played during the big show.

Rihanna faced backlash this week after Muslim fans noticed that she used a song that included sacred Islamic verses during the event. CNN points out that the models danced to the song “Doom” by London-based producer Coucou Chloe during a portion of Rihanna’s show, which streamed on Amazon Prime on Friday. Apparently, the song, released in 2017, includes a remix of a hadith narration about the end of times and judgment day.

Fans took to social media to express disappointment. One fan said:
“How is it okay for Rihanna to have a show of people dancing in underwear with an Islamic hadith about judgment day playing in the background?” TikTok user @nad asked his followers in a video about the show. “If this was the Bible being used, the entire world would be enraged. How is it okay for the work of the most renowned Islamic scholar to be used as music for lingerie?” Twitter user @reversecoconut equated the use of the Hadith to cultural appropriation while noting that in a former show, models wore scarves around their heads like hijabs before commenting that “my religion is not y’all’s aesthetic,” Times notes.
Rihanna is now speaking out to take full accountability and to personally apologize to the Muslim community. The singer thanked her fans for pointing out the huge oversight that was “unintentionally offensive.” While apologizing, she said moving forward, she will make sure nothing like this ever happens again.
