The University of Hong Kong researchers stated they have documented the case of a man who already recovered from the coronavirus but became reinfected after traveling to Spain.

The researchers said the 33-year-old man became the first case in the world to become reinfected with COVID-19 four months after recovering from the virus. Additionally, the researchers discovered he caught a different strain of the virus that has impacted Europe this summer. As reported by the New York Post, clinical microbiologist Dr. Kelvin Kai-Wang said “Our results prove that his second infection is caused by a new virus that he acquired recently rather than prolonged viral shedding,”
This is the first case to be confirmed based on scientific research after much speculation and theories of reinfection. However, the man didn’t display any symptoms, leading to scientists believing reinfection can cause milder symptoms depending on the individual.
“Before this report, many believe that recovered COVID-19 patients have immunity against re-infection, however, there is evidence that some patients have a waning antibody level after a few months,”

Based on their research, this could help scientists understand coronavirus antibodies and possibly immunity.
