His office shared that the Maryland Rep — a sharecropper’s son who rose to become the powerful chairman of a U.S. House committee that investigated President Donald Trump, died early Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, his hometown of complications from longstanding health issues. He was 68 years old.

CBS noted that he has been dealing with his declining health for a while now. Cummings had heart surgery in 2017 and had a bacterial infection in his knee. He hadn’t returned to work recently after having a medical procedure that he said would only keep him away for about a week, The Baltimore Sun noted. The New York Times reported that Cummings was recently seen using a wheelchair with an oxygen tank.

Cummings was one of the strongest voices in Congress for decades who early-on expressed outraged at the way Donald Trump was running the country. Recently, after Trump attacked the City of Baltimore, Cummings went after the Trump, something was never afraid to do.  He became a fierce opponent of Trump’s immigration policies, especially the one that separated children from families, calling it inhumane.

In addition to that, the committee he chaired, Oversight and Reform, is among three panels leading the impeachment inquiry of Trump, a Republican.

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, the chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Party and Cummings’ wife, said in a statement that Cummings was “an honorable man who proudly served his district and the nation with dignity, integrity, compassion and humility,” CBS quotes.

“He worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation’s diversity was our promise, not our problem,” Rockeymoore Cummings said. “I loved him deeply and will miss him dearly.”

Hollywood Unlocked would like to send our deepest condolences and prayers to Cummings’ family and close friends. He will be missed.
