Here’s some positive news to kick off your Wednesday: Reggie Bush has been officially reunited with his 2005 Heisman Trophy.
This decision follows Bush’s voluntary forfeiture of the Heisman Trophy in 2010 due to NCAA sanctions against USC, where he was found to have received improper benefits during his time with the Trojans from 2003 to 2005.
In a symbolic gesture, the Heisman Trust plans to give the original trophy to Bush and a replica to USC. Additionally, Bush will be welcomed back to future Heisman Trophy ceremonies, starting from the 2024 season. Expressing gratitude for rejoining the Heisman family, Bush stated, “Personally, I’m thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I’m honored to return to the Heisman family,” Bush said to ESPN. “I also look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization.”
He also took to Instagram to say, “No one can take from you what God has for you.”
In a statement released by his representatives, he added,
“I am grateful to once again be recognized as the recipient of the Heisman Trophy. This reinstatement is not only a personal victory but also a validation of the tireless efforts of my supporters and advocates who have stood by me throughout this arduous journey.” He continued, “I want to make it abundantly clear that I have always acted with integrity and in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA. The allegations brought against me were unfounded and unsupported by evidence, and I am grateful that the truth is finally prevailing.”
The decision to reinstate the Heisman Trophy was the result of a careful evaluation by the Heisman Trust, considering the significant changes in college athletics, particularly regarding student-athlete compensation. With the acceptance of rules allowing athletes to benefit from their name, image, and likeness, the Trust deemed it fitting to restore Bush’s trophy.
Now, with Bush’s reinstatement, USC has the most Heisman Trophy winners in college football, with eight.
