On Thursday (August 22), Instagram’s parent company Meta announced a feature rolling out that will allow users to express themselves further with music playing on their pages — just like Myspace in the early 2000s.

According to Meta, the new feature is being launched in collaboration with pop star Sabrina Carpenter, whose catchy hit “Espresso” has gone viral this whole Summer. Beginning today, Carpenter’s official Instagram profile will include a teaser of a never-before-hear song of hers called “Taste.” The teaser and collaboration with Instagram arrives ahead of her ‘Short n’ Sweet’ album release on Friday (August 23).

Instagram says that the profile music feature is currently the only way for fans to hear Carpenter’s new song before the full release. Meanwhile, according to screenshots shared by Instagram, the new music on profile feature will show a small widget added to a user’s profile, showing up under the bio area. It will include a start/stop button and show the name of the song followed by the artist’s name.

At the moment, the ability to add a song and have it viewed by other Instagram users only appears to be available on the Instagram mobile app. Also, unlike Myspace, the songs don’t appear to autoplay as of Thursday afternoon. Now, in order to add a song to one’s profile, a user will have to navigate to their profile on Instagram, tap “edit profile,” then scroll down and find the new “Music” option in the list. Tap to add and search for an artist or song that is wanted.

Once a song is selected, Instagram will automatically suggest that it play as a 30-second clip of the chosen tune — which is similar to the function when users go to add a song to an Instagram Reel or Instagram Story post. In order to change the duration or part of the selected song, a user will slide the selector to a different area desired.

Once selected, the user will tap “done,” and the song will appear on their profile. In order to change or remove the song from one’s profile, the user will go back into “edit profile” or just tap on the music widget on their profile. From there, a menu will open up, allowing the user to remove the song.
