Adams walked across the stage at Zebulon B. Vance High School on Saturday as one of the last seniors in the 2020-2021 graduating class before the school is renamed as Julius B. Chambers High School. The occasion comes 20 years after his father, former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth, hired a hitman to shoot Adams’ mother, Cherica Adams, while she was eight months pregnant with him.
Chancellor survived after his mother contacted 911 to save his life and she underwent an emergency C-section but fell into a coma and died a month later in December 1999. Chancellor was born a premature newborn and lives with cerebral palsy along with permanent brain damage as reported by WCNC Charlotte. His grandmother, Saundra Adams, has raised him since his mother’s tragic death.

Carruth was arrested and convicted in 2001 for conspiracy to commit murder. He was released in 2018 from the Sampson Correctional Insitute and fled to Pennsylvania. He also wrote a letter to his son apologizing for the damage he caused and wanted custody of Chancellor but Saundra said she will fight in court for him.
