Dinner service took an unexpected turn after a raccoon fell through a roof tile at a Wisconsin restaurant, startling diners mid-meal. According to USA Today, the incident occurred on December 14 around 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa.

Patron Bit While Attempting to Catch the Animal

Investigators from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office said the raccoon bit a diner before deputies arrived on the scene.

Lt. Pete Krueger told the outlet that the animal bit a patron who attempted to catch the raccoon after it fell into the restaurant. When officers arrived, the raccoon had been confined to a room, and animal control was called in to handle the situation.

Cold Weather Likely Played a Role

Wildlife experts say situations like this aren’t uncommon during extreme winter conditions. “When it gets brutally cold like it was these last two days, it’s not uncommon to get these calls for raccoons going into a structure,” said Matt Snorek, owner of Guaranteed Gone Wildlife Control.

According to The Independent, because the raccoon bit a person, the animal was euthanized and tested for rabies. Officials later confirmed the raccoon tested negative for the disease.
