Although the protestors’ identities were not released to the public, authorities said the incident occurred at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, a city in the state of Brandenburg. The painting, titled “Grainstacks,” once sold for $110 million at an auction in 2019. Monet painted the image in 1890. Museum officials said in a tweet that the painting is protected by a layer of glass and wasn’t ruined.

“Today, October 23, Claude Monet’s painting “Stacks of Grain” was thrown with mashed potatoes by two “Last Generation” activists. Since the picture is glazed, the immediate conservation investigation showed that it was not damaged in any way.”

“The work will be on display again in the exhibition rooms on Wednesday, October 26th. It dates from 1890 and is part of the Hasso Plattner collection. On permanent loan from the Hasso Plattner Foundation, it is on permanent display in the Museum Barberini.”

The two protestors were a part of the Last Generation, and the climate group posted the video on their official Twitter account. After the video went viral online, the women faced backlash for their actions and compared it to a similar situation in the United Kingdom. Police said the Last Generation protestors would be charged with trespassing and property damage.
