Before she was voted out of office, District Attorney Jackie Johnson was facing a federal investigation after she mishandled Arbery’s case and will be replaced by Independent Keith Higgins. Blavity reported Johnson lost by a 5,000 vote margin in Glynn County and Higgins acknowledged during a press conference that her conduct regarding the case contributed to his win. He will begin his term as district attorney in January 2021.

“First and foremost, part of the task is to create a greater degree of public confidence that things are being handled properly and the way they should and that everybody is treated equally fair under the law,”.

Johnson worked alongside Gregory McMichael and told authorities that it was unnecessary to arrest him for Arbery’s death. However, when her decision received backlash nationwide, Jackson assigned the case to George Barnhill. Barnhill is also under federal investigation for similar behavior after he expressed that the McMichaels should not be arrested.
