On Wednesday (August 20), former NFL star running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson alleged that the NFL told teams not to draft Shedeur Sanders, reportedly wanting to “make an example out of him” and and his father Deion Sanders.

For some time, there have been unconfirmed rumors about the league telling teams not to draft the potential No. 1 pick to teach him and his father, Hall of Famer-turned-college coach Deion Sanders (aka Coach Prime), a hard lesson in humility.

While appearing on The Roggin & Rodney Show‘ on AM 570 LA Sports, Eric Dickerson addressed the rumors and made some allegations. He claimed he had a “very good source” that told him the league allegedly warned teams not to draft the quarterback out of spite. He said:

“I tell you this much, what I heard from someone that’s in the NFL, that the NFL told [teams], ‘Don’t draft him, do not draft him. We’re going to make an example out of him.’ And this came from a very good source, a very good source.”

Additionally, Dickerson even alleged that someone from the league called the Cleveland Browns — the team that ultimately selected Sanders with a fifth-round pick (No. 133 overall). Dickerson claimed the Browns were allegedly told not to draft the former Colorado Buffaloes star.  He said:

“He said that – I won’t say who – somebody called the Cleveland Browns and said, ‘Don’t do that, don’t draft him.’ Because they weren’t going to draft him either… They were forced into drafting him because somebody made a call to them.”

Roggin asked, “So, what was the objective? He doesn’t get picked, he’s an undrafted free agent?” Dickerson replied:

“That’s exactly what was going to happen. They were going to have him not get drafted to basically show you ‘this is what happens when you do this.’ I mean, look, [Roggin], the NFL’s got all kinds of power, they do all kinds of stuff. You know it and I know it too.”

A day after Dickerson’s allegation, Sports Illustrated journalist Albert Breer went on The Dan Patrick Show and talked about the rumor. Breer told host Dan Patrick:

“Yeah. I always think these sorts of conspiracies are a little overdone. I don’t think there was any conspiracy here. I think it’s relatively simple what happened. I think the great majority of NFL teams did not view him as a first-round prospect contrary to what had been out there for the year previous. And then I think what happens is once you get past the first round, you look at the history over over the years, not a lot of quarterbacks go in the second or third rounds…”
