Princess Mako and her fiance, Kei Komuro, are planning to live in the United States after their wedding later this year and refused any help from the Japanese government. Komuro is currently living in the US and is waiting for the results of his law exams in December and is expected to accept a job offer at a law firm.

Mako is expected to rescind her royal title from the imperial royal family as she decided to marry a “commoner” and based on the country’s 1947 Imperial House Law, she is not expected to take over the Chrysanthemum throne since women are not allowed to.

The couple met in 2012 while attending the International Christian University in Tokyo.

According to Insider, Mako’s grandmother reportedly opposed the relationship in 2017 after it was Komuro’s mother was involved in a $40,000 monetary dispute. His mother said the money was used to fund his schooling and there were no expectations of paying it back.

However, the princess said in a statement last year that she and her partner will continue on with the wedding.

“For us, a marriage is a necessary choice to live and honor our hearts. We are irreplaceable for one another, and we lean on each other in happy times and unhappy ones”
