After 18 years, a third installment to “Princess Diaries” is officially said to be in the works, according to a new report. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has started working on the motion picture — currently remains in its “very early stages” of development — which could mean the film probably won’t be released until the end of next year or early 2024.
The publication also asserts that the upcoming flick will not be a reboot but a continuation of the first two films written by Aadrita Mukerji. And while fans will be eager to know whether Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrew will be reprising their iconic roles as Mia and Queen Clarisse, respectively, Disney has yet to confirm which cast members will be coming back for the third run, if any at all.

However, given that the script is being written as a continuation of the previous two installments, it would seem rather likely that both Anne and Julie will be involved in the project in some capacity. It was just in October when the Oscar award-winning actress told ET she would “more than entertain” the idea of being part of a third movie if she was approached to do it again. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work,” Anne added.
“We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.” The first installment, which was released back in 2001, follows the life of teenage student Mia who learns she is heir to the throne of a kingdom in Genovia. As the second film concludes, Mia has adjusted to her new-found position as the Queen of Genovia.
Julie also recently touched on the idea of returning to play her role as Queen Clarisse, fearing that because she’s much older since she last played the part, the actress wasn’t convinced that she would still be fit to portray the character at this point in her life.

“I don’t know, I think I’m the one — she’s probably still OK for it, but I might just be a little too old a granny for it, I don’t know,” she explained. “It depends on what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful, but if not, there will be other things.”
The “Princess Diaries” movies combined have amassed over $300 million at the worldwide box office.
