Prince Charles Will Not Attend Princess Diana’s Statue Unveiling Because “He Doesn’t Want To Be A Distraction”

Prince Charles will not be attending Princess Diana’s statue unveiling,

According to ET Charles who was married to Diana from 1981 to 1996, will be absent from the event to avoid being “a distraction” at the event.

“He and Diana had a complicated relationship after their divorce, but they came to appreciate each other,” the source said to ET.

Charles is currently married to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. In the past, he has also opted out of attending events that commemorate or remember Diana.

The statue was commissioned by Prince William and Prince Harry in 2017 on the 20th anniversary of their mom’s death  to “recognize her positive impact in the United Kingdom and around the world.” The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the unveiling and it is now scheduled for July 1, which would mark Diana’s 60th birthday.

Harry will be coming alone as his wife Meghan Markle recently gave birth to their baby girl. This will be the first time Harry reunites with his family since Prince Phillip’s funeral.

“The idea that Harry’s suddenly going to come around to William’s way of thinking, and vice versa, I think is way off. I think there do need to be more conversations, there’s clearly still a lot of hurt, a lot of resentment, and a degree of mistrust on both parts,” royal expert Katie Nicholl said to ET. “It’s early days, but I think the hope is that come July — when we are hoping to see the brothers stand once again shoulder by shoulder to unveil the statue in memory of their mother — that the relationship will be stronger and in a better place.”
