One week after Trump issued his executive order to ban TikTok and WeChat from performing any U.S.-based transactions by September 15, he is now asking the owners to sell their assets in the United States and erase all day within a 90-day period. According to Newsweek, the executive order is asking for ByteDance to “divest all interests and rights” which includes their assets or properties to support TikTok’s US operations and let it be determined by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

It is also preventing the company from obtaining any interest in the popular app Musical.ly as Trump stated it may cause great security concerns. He writes, “There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that ByteDance Ltd. … through acquiring all interests in musical.ly … might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States,”

Additionally, the president says, “The transaction resulting in the acquisition by ByteDance of Musical.ly … is hereby prohibited,” the order continues. “And ownership by ByteDance of any interest in Musical.ly in the United States, whether effected [sic] directly or indirectly through ByteDance, or through ByteDance’s subsidiaries, affiliates, or Chinese shareholders, is also prohibited.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo addressed the order during a press conference in Prague, Czech Republic, and said the data from the popular app is being sent to the Chinese Communist Party’s national security. He emphasized it is causing a huge worry for the safety of Americans.

“This is about data sets that were clearly available to the Chinese Communist Party’s national security apparatus. Enormous data sets. That’s just not something that the United States is prepared to permit,”
