According to the Washington Post, four unnamed people had provided information to The Atlantic regarding Trump’s comments on veterans and fallen soldiers. They said he made the comments after he canceled a  2018 visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris and blamed the rain for his decision. Additionally, Trump believed it was not important to honor American soldiers who died during the war. He said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers” and called the 1,800 deceased marines “suckers” for getting killed at Belleau Wood.

Amid the magazine’s report, White House spokeswoman Alyssa Farah called the accusations false and said the president has the utmost respect for the military:

“He’s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much-needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms, and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact.”

Upon his arrival to Washington on Thursday, Trump denied the claims and called the alleged informants “informants”:

“I would be willing to swear on anything that I never said that about our fallen heroes. There is nobody that respects them more. So, I just think it’s a horrible, horrible thing.”

Trump also addressed his comments regarding late senator John McCain via Twitter and claimed he never called him a “loser”
