On Thursday (July 11), President Biden announced that the United States is sending $225 million in military aid for Ukraine, including a Patriot air defense system that will help the nation defend its skies from continued deadly Russian airstrikes. It’s reported that the decision to send another package to Ukraine was revealed when Biden recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensykyy at the NATO Summit in Washington, D.C.

While at the summit, Zelenskyy thanked and praised President Joe Biden for the new weapons package, calling the announcement “strong news.” Additionally, according to the Associated Press, he continued to request that the U.S. give Ukraine further permission to fire U.S.-provided long-range missiles at its targets not only within its territory but further past Russian borders. He further said that Ukraine needs some “quick steps to lift limitations for Ukrainian soldiers,” referring to the restrictions that the U.S. has placed on the use of its weapons.

President Joe Biden’s new $225 million weapons package for Ukraine also includes a Patriot missile battery; munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS); Stinger anti-aircraft missiles; ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS); 155-millimeter and 105-millimeter artillery rounds, and many other munitions.

AP reports that the Patriot air defense system included in this latest military aid package to Ukraine is the second one the U.S. has provided to the nation and is one of several that President Joe Biden has announced this week at the NATO summit. It is reportedly part of several pledges to help get weapons to Ukraine in its fight against Russian airstrikes and other attacks, including one that occurred this week that struck a children’s hospital in Kyiv.

Prior to President Joe Biden’s comments on Thursday, he teased his announcement on Tuesday (July 9) during the launch of the NATO event. He spoke on “the historic donation of air defense equipment for Ukraine,” that would be provided by the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Italy. He said they would be providing Kyiv “with the equipment for five additional strategic air defense systems.”
