The DEI fallout continues as President Donald Trump’s executive order yanks US Air Force training videos of the first Black pilots (the Tuskegee Airmen) and first female pilots (WASPs) from recruits.
President Donald Trump’s executive order halting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives has not only led to potential boycotts of Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other major retailers complying, but has also resulted in the US Air Force yanking training videos of the Tuskegee Airmen and female pilots from recruits.
As we previously shared, on his first day back in office (January 20), Trump signed “close to 100” executive orders, one of which sought to dismantle DEI programs in federal sectors, with a nudge for private sectors and businesses too. DEI initiatives and programs seek to promote opportunities for women, ethnic minorities, and other groups traditionally underrepresented in America.

Before Trump’s anti-DEI order, the U.S. Air Force’s course instruction included a documentary about the first Black pilots in the U.S. military, known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The famed aviators, also known as the “Red Tails,” included 450 Black pilots who fought overseas in a segregated unit during World War II.
The all-Black 332nd Fighter Group had one of the lowest loss records of all the bomber escorts during the Second World War. Due to the Tuskegee Airmen’s success in combat, President Harry Truman decided to desegregate the U.S. Armed Forces in 1948.
In 2007, President George W. Bush awarded the Tuskegee Airmen the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda. Then, in 2020, during Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, he announced that he had promoted one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, Charles McGee, to Brigadier General. McGee later died in 2022 at age 102.
In addition to training videos of the Tuskegee Airmen being yanked by President Donald Trump’s DEI order, recruits of the US Air Force will no longer be taught about the nation’s first female pilots. It’s reported that another video instructing recruits about civilian female pilots trained by the U.S. military during World War II, known as the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, was also stripped from Air Force training materials.

These women played a vital role in piloting warplanes for the military as they learned to fly and ferry new bombers off the assembly lines to airfields before being shipped off to war. This process freed up male pilots allowing them time to focus on combat missions overseas. Within the last decade, the WASPs were even awarded the right to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
In a statement, the U.S. Air Force confirmed that training videos of the Tuskegee Airmen and first female pilots had been pulled and said it “will fully execute and implement all directives outlined in the Executive Orders issued by the President, ensuring that they are carried out with utmost professionalism, efficiency and in alignment with national security objectives.”
