As part of President Donald Trump‘s handfuls of executive orders signed within the first couple of days of his second presidency, he has now banned transgender women from U.S. prisons housing female inmates. At this time, it appears the order only requires the rehousing of transgender women, not transgender men.

According to a new executive order — which has been titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government” on the White House website — signed by President Donald Trump on his first day back in office (January 20), he is calling for the federal government to define sex as only male or female and for that to be reflected on official documents, such as passports and policies such as federal prison assignments.

Currently, the number of people affected is relatively small with about 1,500 federal prisoners identifying as transgender women, according to the Bureau of Prisons. However, it’s noted that although the overall size is small, the number of transgender women outsizes the portion of female prisoners, with 15% of women in female-housed prisons being transgender. Meanwhile, there are 750 transgender men out of about 144,000 male prisoners.

Trump’s order, which declares that there are just two sexes (male and female) and also places restrictions on housing and healthcare for transgender prisoners in his previous term, also applies to immigration detainees. The order also prevents people from transitioning from one gender to another while behind bars. It also rejects them from being considered something other than male or female, such as nonbinary, which describes people who do not identify as strictly men, women, or intersex.

According to reports, President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender women from U.S. prisons for female inmates conflicts with the stance of the American Medical Association and other large medical organizations and agencies. Notably, because they’ve provided extensive scientific research that suggests sex and gender are better digested as a spectrum of color versus black or white.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s order banning transgender women from U.S. prisons for female inmates argues that it is intended to protect women’s spaces from people who “self-identify” as women. It also claims, “Efforts to eradicate the biological reality of sex fundamentally attack women by depriving them of their dignity, safety, and well-being.”

The order oalso claims the sexes are based on the reproductive cells, large cells in females and smaller ones in males. It also suggests that humans have these cells at conception. Countering the order’s unconventional way of defining the two sexes, biologists claim egg cells are developed several weeks after conception and that sperm cells are produced during puberty.
