Wow! President Donald Trump demands a couple of sports teams to “immediately” make their names racist again — telling the “Washington Whatevers” to switch back to “Redskins” from “Commanders,” and the “Cleveland Guardians” to revert back to “Indians.”

Football Team fWashington Redskins Change Name To Washington Commanders
In July 2020, the “Redskins” responded to economic pressure to change its name and logo after the George Floyd protests. The team called itself the “Washington Football Team” before rebranding as the “Commanders” in 2022. In the July 2020 statement, the team said:
“On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name. That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans, and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward.
Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review. Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

Baseball Team Cleveland Indians Change Name To Cleveland Guardians
In July 2020, the Cleveland Indians considered a name change amid the Washington Redskins controversy. At the time, the team’s official Twitter account wrote:
“We are committed to making a positive impact in our community and embrace our responsibility to advance social justice and equality. Our organization fully recognizes our team name is among the most visible ways in which we connect with the community.
We have had ongoing discussions organizationally on these issues. The recent unrest in our community and our country has only underscored the need for us to keep improving as an organization on issues of social justice. With that in mind, we are committed to engaging our community and appropriate stakeholders to determine the best path forward with regard to our team name.
While the focus of the baseball world shifts to the excitement of an unprecedented 2020 season, we recognize our unique place in the community and are committed to listening, learning and acting in the manner that can best unite and inspire our city and all those who support our team.”
In December, Cleveland announced that it was going to be changing its name. Then, in July 2021, the baseball team announced the official switch from “Indians” to “Guardians.” In 2018, the team had already phased out “Chief Wahoo” as its primary logo.

President Donald Trump Urges Washington Commanders To Revert Back to ‘Redskins’ And Cleveland Guardians To Switch Back To ‘Indians’
On Sunday (July 20), President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, and urged the owners of football team Washington Commanders and baseball team Cleveland Guardians to switch back to their offensive names at once.
While urging the Washington Commanders reemploy its “Redskins” name and the Cleveland Guardians go back to its “Indians” name, Trump said:
“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the ‘Washington Redskins Football Team.’ There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the ‘Cleveland Indians,’ one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
