In a new interview, President Donald Trump, 78, has declined to endorse his Vice President JD Vance, 40, as his 2028 successor, claiming he doesn’t view Vance as the next Republican nominee. At least not yet, as it’s too early to tell. Vance, the third-youngest Vice President in United States history, was selected by Trump as his running mate in July 2024 after his first son Donald Trump Jr. encouraged him to nominate the then-Ohio Senator.
Donald Trump Declines To Endorse JD Vance As 2028 Successor
During his Super Bowl interview with Fox News, which aired on Monday (February 10), President Donald Trump refused to endorse his Vice President JD Vance as his 2028 successor and Republican nominee. While sitting down with Fox News Chief Political Anchor Bret Baier, Donald Trump was asked, “Do you view Vice President JD Vance as your successor, the Republican nominee in 2028?”
Trump immediately responded and said, “No.” However, he quickly followed up and said, “But, he’s very capable. I mean, I don’t think that it—you know, I think you have a lot of very capable people. So far, I think that he’s doing a fantastic job. It’s too early, we’re just starting.”
Baier agreed and said, “Right.” He then pushed back, pointing out that the 2026 midterms will soon be on the horizon and if Vance decides to run he will be seeking support from the current president. He said, “But, by the time you get to the midterms, he’s going to be looking for an endorsement.”
Trump replied, “Yeah, a lot of people have said that this has been the greatest opening — almost three weeks [in] — in the history of the presidency.” Baier replied, “That’s probably been the fastest and the most stuff happening.” Trump agreed and replied, “Well, we’ve done so much so fast. And we really had to because they have really—what they’ve done to our country is so sad. It’s so sad. We’re going to be bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.”
Donald Trump’s Choice To Not Endorse JD Vance Deemed ‘Shocking’
While discussing his interview on Fox News Monday afternoon, just hours before the full interview aired, Baier spoke with Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum and described Trump’s answer as “shocking.” He said:
“I think it was a little shocking when he said no. I wasn’t expecting that, but you know, following up, once you get to the midterms, you start to think about 2028, and one would think JD Vance is going to be in position for that role. But clearly, the president isn’t ready to talk about that or think about it, and said there are other people that may get in the mix.”
Donald Trump’s Fox News interview, in which he refuses to endorse JD Vance as his 2028 successor and next Republican nominee, aired hours after Vance landed in France with his family for the start of his first foreign trip as Vice President. While in France, Vance attended an artificial intelligence summit in Paris before traveling next to the annual Munich Security Conference in Germany, scheduled for this weekend.
