Pregnant Teacher Loses Baby In Hit & Run After Leaving Baby Shower

A 24-year-old Mississippi teacher lost her baby after being hit by a car while leaving her baby shower.

Mashayla Harper was taken to the hospital after being found in the middle of the road. Harper was driving home from her baby shower when her car was hit by a Nissan. The driver was identified as 33-year-old James Gilbert, who escaped the scene on foot. Once he was apprehended, he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused death or injuries and he is being held on a $100,000 bond.

He had allegedly been drinking,

“I was scared,” he told The Laurel-Leader Call. “I’m very sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Harper was taken to the South Central Regional Medical Center to Forrest General, where she had to have surgery. Her family report that she is in critical condition.

Harper’s father, Maurice Pruitt Sr., took to Facebook to give an update,

“To see our baby go from this being the happiest day if her life to I.C.U. in a matter of minutes was a complete tragedy,” Pruitt said. “That idiot hit her head on and left her out there on that road to die. We are grateful for the individual that happened to be in the area hunting to come to her aid, otherwise, we may not be sitting in I.C.U. praying as she fights for her life.”
