“I Was Shocked. I Was Angry”: Dwight Eubanks Gets Real About His Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

In an exclusive with PEOPLE, Dwight Eubanks shared that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year — and the story behind the diagnosis is both frustrating and inspiring.
It all started back in January when Dwight decided to host a local health fair and took a moment to get his bloodwork done. Just a week later, his doctor told him to come in urgently — and that’s when the news dropped. Despite feeling perfectly healthy, his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were off the charts.
But what hit harder was learning that this diagnosis could’ve been spotted years ago.
Dwight, who has lived with HIV since the 1980s and gets regular checkups every six months, says his doctors missed red flags back in 2022. His PSA levels were already elevated — and no one said a word.
“I was shocked. I was angry,” he recalls. “I was just emotionally a wreck.”
Reflecting on that moment, Dwight didn’t hold back:
“I was like, are you kidding me? This was back in 2022 and nobody said anything to me. He just said, ‘You’re undetectable, so you are fine.’ Never said anything about my prostate. I guess they just weren’t looking at that.”
From Pain to Purpose: Dwight Becomes Voice for Prostate Cancer Awareness
Despite the whirlwind of emotions, Dwight isn’t dwelling in the darkness. He’s choosing purpose and using his platform to uplift others.
He’s now officially a brand ambassador for ZERO Prostate Cancer, a national nonprofit that advocates for early detection and provides support for those affected by the disease. The 64-year-old star is focused on spreading awareness, especially among Black men, who face a higher risk for prostate cancer and often receive late diagnoses.
“I could not be silent with this because it could help people if they just get tested and don’t wait too long. And most important: ask questions, look at your records, investigate.”
For Dwight, it’s not about pointing fingers or being bitter — it’s about paying it forward.
“I can’t say what should have, could have, or would have been, but I just have to embrace where I am now and be grateful and try to help somebody else along the way.”
His strength, his transparency, and his willingness to speak on such a personal battle is exactly why so many fans still ride for Dwight. He turned a missed opportunity into a mission.
Why Prostate Cancer Awareness Hits Different for Black Men
Dwight’s diagnosis is sparking an overdue convo in the Black community. According to the American Cancer Society, Black men are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with — and twice as likely to die from — prostate cancer compared to white men.
So when someone like Dwight, a public figure who’s been through it and is still here standing, speaks up? We need to listen.
