According to NBC 12, one of the officers was a 22-year-old veteran and the other was fairly new on the job. The rookie cop reportedly only worked less than a year on the force. The names of the two officers have yet to be revealed to the public, but the officers were praised as heroes.

“These two men were loved,” interim El Monte Police Department Chief Ben Lowry said Tuesday night. “They were good men, they paid the ultimate sacrifice serving their community, trying to help somebody.”

The officers “confronted the suspect,” according to LA County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Capt. Andrew Meyer, and there were two trades of gunfire, one inside the motel room and an additional one in the parking lot of the motel.

A handgun was located at the scene, Meyer said.

The two wounded officers were taken to LA County USC Medical Center where they were later pronounced dead from their injuries.
