People Around The World Mark The One Year Anniversary Of George Floyd’s Death

One year ago today, the whole world watched George Floyd take his last breaths as former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. His senseless killing sparked massive protests around the world which highlighted the painful reality of systemic racism in America. However, it ignited an even bigger push in the Black Lives Matter movement in the fight against police brutality and social injustice.

While many will be paying tribute to Floyd, his family is reflecting on the difficult year they’ve faced since his killing: “To everybody else, this was a case and a cause,” Philonise Floyd, his brother, said. “But to me, that was my big brother.” LaTonya Floyd, his sister, added to US Weekly, “It’s been a year that’s ripped my heart out.” Although Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, many people wanted President Biden to pass a police reform bill before the first anniversary of George Floyd’s death. However, he is expected to meet with his family today at the White House.

Aside from this, the one-year mark of his murder will be observed with a block party in the Houston housing projects where Floyd grew up and there will be other marches and events across the United States. Many social media users and public figures have already taken to Twitter to reflect on Floyd’s impact on police reform, while others remembered him as a beloved family member, friend, and father.

Former President Obama said,

“George Floyd was murdered one year ago today. Since then, hundreds more Americans have died in encounters with police—parents, sons, daughters, friends taken from us far too soon. But the last year has also given us reasons to hope.”

Senator Bernie Sanders also added,

“Today, we honor George Floyd’s life and mourn with his family. One year after his murder, we remain dedicated to rooting out systemic racism and police violence against people of color, and building a nation free of oppression that respects the human dignity of every person.”
