The parents of two Florida teens who died in a car accident last July are suing Florida Highway Patrol and Escambia County’s medical examiners for misidentifying their remains.

According to CBS News, the parents of Samara Cooks,15, and Deleigha Gibson,18 have filed a lawsuit against the state’s Highway Patrol and medical examiners for mixing up their daughters’ remains after they died in a car crash last year. Ranada Cooks said she discovered the horrifying mixup when she requested to see Samara’s remains at a local funeral home:

“That’s when I noticed that it was not Samara and it was a mix-up. I was thinking, ‘Well, maybe there’s a chance that she’s still alive.’”

It was also discovered that Samara’s organs were removed without her parents’ knowledge and her identification did not list her as an organ donor. Deleigha’s father, Demetrius Gibson, said the director of another funeral home tried to switch the bodies before the family could find out.

The Florida Highway Patrol said in a statement that the mix-up was due to the severity of the car accident.

“Due to the nature of this crash involving multiple ejections, positive identifications at the scene were not made,”
