OMG! In Thailand, two parents say their baby’s dark brown eyes turned indigo blue overnight after the infant received a COVID-19 treatment.

It’s reported that a 6-month-old baby boy was diagnosed with COVID-19 after his parents noticed he’d been suffering from a fever and a cough for a day. After being diagnosed by doctors in Thailand, the infant was prescribed a medicine called favipiravir — an antiviral treatment approved by the Thai Ministry of Public Health in 2022 for children who suffer mild to moderate symptoms.

The medicine is also approved in Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Moldova and Kazakhstan; and in 2020, it was approved for emergency use in Italy.

While the parents were expecting their baby boy to get better, what they didn’t see coming was how about 18 hours after being administered the medication, the child’s beautiful dark brown eyes had changed to an indigo blue color. The mother was the first to notice and she immediately became concerned and contacted medical professionals for help.

The infant’s mother was instructed to immediately cease administering the the COVID-19 treatment treatment to her son, and about five days later, she noticed the discoloration had faded and her son’s cornea returned to its natural color. After being examined by doctors, they had discovered that the boy’s cornea had cleared and lacked a bluish tint. They noted that there was no longer a blue pigment deposit on the surface of the iris nor the anterior lens capsule.

The medical professionals claim they aren’t quite sure why favipiravir seemingly causes discoloration to eyes, but they have a theory that the fluorescence (or emission of absorbed light) “may be due to the drug, its metabolites, or additional tablet components such as titanium dioxide and yellow ferric oxide.”

It is further noted that previous studies have been conducted and have shown “a direct relationship” between the concentration of favipiravir and fluorescence intensity, specifically in human hair and nails. Fortunately, in the case of the 6-month-old child, they did not appear to have suffered any damage to their vision, and his COVID-19 symptoms were fully treated.

Elsewhere, it is detailed that the most common side effects of favipiravir treatment include: diarrhea; mild hyperuricemia (raised levels of uric acid); and neutropenia (lowered levels of the white blood cell neutrophils). It is said that when all of the these symptoms are combined, they roughly account for 20 percent of the adverse reactions seen in patients.

Additionally, there’s been one other documented case of corneal discoloration due to a patient taking favipiravir. In 2021, a 20-year-old man in India reported the first case of the unusual adverse side effect of the medication.

After the unnamed man was diagnosed with COVID-19, he was prescribed the medication. He received the prescription after trying to treat his symptoms for two days and seeing no improvements while taking vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and ivermectin. On his second day of the favipiravir treatment, the man began to see his dark brown eyes change to an indigo blue hue. Doctors told him to stop taking the COVID-19 treatment, and after just one day clean, his eyes returned to their natural color.
