Overwhelmed Texas Hospital Is Sending ‘Too Sick’ Coronavirus Patients Home To Die

An overwhelmed Texas hospital is gearing up to send coronavirus patients home to die if deemed “too sick.” The news arrives out of Starr County, where government and health officials announced they’re forming committees to review cases at the Starr County Memorial Hospital in Rio Grande City, a small institution along the US-Mexico border.

Officials say at least 50% of patients admitted to the emergency room are testing positive for COVID-19, with county health authority Dr. Jose Vasquez adding, “The situation is desperate. Those patients who most certainly don’t have any hope of improving, we believe they are better taken care of within their own family in the love of their own home rather than thousands of miles away, dying in a hospital room alone.”

Additionally, on Thursday, Starr County Judge Eloy Vera  wrote on Facebook, “Unfortunately, Starr County Memorial Hospital has limited resources and our doctors are going to have to decide who receives treatment, and who is sent home to die by their loved ones. This is what we did not want our community to experience.” Starr County’s been hit with 1,701 COVID cases and have seen at least 17 deaths, with 32 pending state confirmation.
