Oversight Board Rules Donald Trump Cannot Return To Facebook

Welp, it’s official: Mr. Donald Trump cannot return to Facebook!

Earlier this Thursday morning, social media users became a little concerned as a board was preparing to decide whether or not Trump could return to social media. However, Facebook’s Oversight Board, the independent body established by the social giant to review content-policy decisions ruled to permanently ban Trump from Facebook and Instagram.

As we previously reported, Trump was suspended from Facebook and Instagram over his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol seeking to overturn the 2020 election. Facebook temporarily froze Trump’s accounts on Jan. 7 through at least President Biden’s inauguration, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg citing the potential for ongoing violence for the decision. “We believe the risks of allowing the president to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,” Zuckerberg said at the time. On January 8, Twitter banned Trump permanently while other internet companies have taken similar actions.

The decision by Facebook’s “Oversight Board” means it will not have to reverse the indefinite suspension that went into effect after the Capitol Riots. However, th the committee did say that Facebook had acted inappropriately in the way it enacted the ban, and instructed the company to undertake a review into how the ban was determined.
