Over 50 Hospitalized In Pennsylvania Turnpike Crash

A fatal crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike involving a bus and multiple other cars, has left five people dead and over 50 others injured early Sunday morning.

According to officials 60 people have been taken to the hospital since the accident happened at 3:40 a.m. in Westmoreland County. The injured range in age from 7-52-years-old. The crash consisted of multiple cars including a bus, two trucks, passenger cars and a FedEx truck.

Turnpike spokesman Carl Defebo released a statement on Twitter,

“About 60 patients have been transported to three area hospitals in Westmoreland County due to multi-vehicle crash on @PA_Turnpike at milepost 86 westbound. Coroner has confirmed five fatalities. An 86-mile stretch of Turnpike still closed from New Stanton to Breezewood exits.”

Pennsylvania State Police report that the tour bus was driving downhill on a curve while on the Pennsylvania Turnpike before it hit an embankment. The other commercial vehicles then crashed into the bus. A total of six vehicles were involved.

Angela Maynard, a tractor-trailer driver from Kentucky, spoke to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

“It was horrible,” she said. “I walked toward the scene and saw one of the truck drivers laying near the barrier. I tried to keep him occupied, keep talking, until medical help arrived,” Maynard told the Tribune-Review. “He was in bad shape. He was floating in and out of consciousness.”

As of now, those who were involved in the crash have not been identified.
