Oprah Winfrey Gives Up Cover Of O magazine For 1st Time To Honor Breonna Taylor
Just recently it was announced that Oprah Winfrey’s magazine will end its monthly print publication following the December 2020 issue and go entirely digital next year, ending a 20-year run. A Hearst spokeswoman said on Monday that O, which is among the most recognizable magazines in the U.S, will not be going away but will become “more digitally-centric.” “There will be “some form of print” after the December issue “but what it is exactly is still being worked out.”

Following the big news, Oprah fans received an even bigger one this Thursday. The former talk show host unveiled the September issue’s cover, and for the first time in its 20-year history, it did not feature the star. Instead, it featured a tribute to Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old Black woman who was killed by police in March.
Oprah took to social media to explain what this moment meant to her. She wrote in her caption, “Breonna Taylor. She was just like me. She was just like you. And like everyone who dies unexpectedly, she had plans. Plans for a future filled with responsibility and work and friends and laughter. I think about Breonna Taylor often. Imagine if three unidentified men burst into your home while you were sleeping. And your partner fired a gun to protect you. And then mayhem. What I know for sure: We can’t be silent. We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice. And that is why Breonna Taylor is on the cover of @oprahmagazine.”
The 66-year-old went on to say, “The September issue honors her life and the life of every other Black woman whose life has been taken too soon. Head to OprahMag.com for more—and thank you to @alexis_art, a 24-year-old digital artist, who captured the essence of Breonna. The issue will be available wherever you buy or download magazines on 8/11.”
No officers have been charged in the killing of Breonna Taylor which is why people have continued the fight to get justice for her.
Many ways to help is by signing the Change.Org and Color of Change petitions to demand justice from Kentucky officials. Many activists are also encouraging people to call Kentucky’s attorney general, mayor, governor, and the public integrity unit of the Louisville Metro Police Department to demand the officers involved in Breonna’s death are fired and charged with her killing. You can also visit StandWithBre.com for guidance. Others have been using the Hashtag #SayHerName on social media—so no one forgets her: Breonna Taylor.
