The First Lady fired at late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over comments tied to a White House Correspondents’ Dinner parody segment. In her post, she wrote:
“Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate.”
She continued, saying:
“A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community.”
The controversy traces back to a joke Kimmel delivered during a parody version of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he said: “Our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow,”
The line was clearly intended as satire in a comedic setting, but it resurfaced in a much more serious context after a separate incident at the actual Correspondents’ Dinner.
Two days after the parody, suspected gunman Cole Allen allegedly attempted a shooting at the event, leading to panic and a rapid security response. Authorities have not established any connection between the joke and the incident, and there is no evidence linking the two.
Still, the timing of everything sparked online debate, with some criticizing Kimmel’s joke as poorly judged in hindsight, while others argued it was being unfairly tied to events that were unrelated.
ABC has not publicly responded to the latest statement from Melania Trump or the broader backlash surrounding the segment. Kimmel himself has also not commented publicly since the situation escalated.
