An off-duty police officer was also shot and is currently in critical condition, “struggling for her life.” Eleven of the victims are women. At least seven others of the injured were taken to hospitals in critical condition.

The shooting is reported to have taken place shortly after midnight between Anacostia River and Fort Circle Park. Police believe three people opened fire from separate posts at the same time.

The chief of police believes the shooting was an isolated incident and the current motive is unknown. It’s also unclear why the off-duty officer was on site. However, large gatherings have been banned due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
